The band formed in 1997 and began DJing in 1999. Way back when there was a huge barrier between rock kids and “ravers.” Now the mixture of those two has produced a species known as “hipsters” and apparently it’s safe to DJ anywhere now. That’s a good thing because in 1999, they were ridiculed by rock kids for liking “techno,” even though at that time they were spinning disco and french house. They still spin that stuff along with rock and electro house. It just depends on the night and the crowd. They like to actually match beats and have great respect for other DJ’s who do the same whether it’s on vinyl or computer.

His agile melodies layered over headnodic, immaculately-produced beats captivated fans across the internet and across the world. “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough” was picked up by Japanese super-producer Nujabes, pressed in Japan and sold 5,000 copies in the first six months. Emancipator landed a Puma sponsorship, gave an interview to Rolling Stone Japan, discovered one of his songs was played at the Beijing Olympics (still trying to figure out how that happened) and his song “Shook,” a mashup that perfectly mixes Mobb Deep’s mighty raps with a haunting track from the Icelandic band Sigur Ros, become the highest-rated song on Hype Machine’s “Best 50 Songs of 2007,” and appeared on Hype Machine as the #2 most popular song in April 2009.
His latest album “Safe In The Steep Cliffs” blends new instrumentation and organic samples with the signature Emancipator style of clean production, silky melodies and addictive drums. Dense layers of choirs, horns, American folk instruments such as the banjo and mandolin, violin and some distinct Asian influences make for a playful but refined album built out of intricate tracks listeners can enjoy on as many levels as they want. Dance to it, chill out to it, immerse your mind in it.

The fabled MKPH of St. Louis announces to all that the city’s Champion Krewe shall be hosting the mysteries and delights of its 2010 Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball on Friday, February 12, commencing at 8PM and featuring a legendary band from St.Louis, THE HEATERS. Famed as the virtual house-band for many years at the Broadway Oyster Bar, they are bringing a night of music fit for Mardi Gras augmented by a horn section and special guests. FM 88.1 KDHX DJ “The Soul Selector Papa Ray”, will be also spinning music this evening for the proper vibe of 2010; all of this, at St. Louis’ newest alternative venue for music & art culture and co-mingling, 2720 on Cherokee Street.
Amazingly, tickets are just $10.00 for this night! Tickets will be available at the door, and attendance is limited. Come and co-mingle with St. Louis’ most awarded Mardi Gras Krewe, as they prepare for the next day’s parade: be sure to see The Mystic Knights on the battle-field, Saturday the 13th, when their float and walkers go out to thrill the thousands of attendees as they have done for over 20 years.
