A Unique Music & Art Venue on Cherokee Street in St. Louis

Fri 1.14 – Ernest Trova Art Show + The Definition of Dance

ArtDimensions is putting on a show featuring the work of Ernest Trova this Friday night, Jan. 14th in the upstairs gallery space. Downstairs will be the third installment of The Definition of Dance featuring The Hot House Sessions.

7pm Doors / 7pm Show / 21+ / $7 cover

Ernest Tino Trova (February 19, 1927 – March 8, 2009) was a self-trained American surrealist and pop art painter and sculptor. Best known for his signature image and figure series, The Falling Man, Trova considered his entire output a single “work in progress.” Trova used classic American comic character toys in some of his pieces because he admired their surrealism. Many of Trova’s sculptures are cast in unusual white bronze. He began as a painter, progressing through three-dimensional constructions to his mature medium, sculpture. Trova’s gift of forty of his works led to the opening of St. Louis’ Laumeier Sculpture Park.

DESIGNER DRUGS

+ Cor(e)yography + Andy Mon$y

8pm Doors / 9pm Show

18+ / $12adv-$15dos ($3 minor surcharge)

Ask the DJ/production duo DESIGNER DRUGS how many air miles they’ve logged over the past year and the answer requires more than a bit of calculating. “Over 300,000,” Michael Vincent Patrick referencing numerous spots around the world where the group has performed. “I have a really nice apartment in New York City, but I’ve only been there three days this month.”

It’s a testament both to the duo’s popularity and work ethic that that number may become the annual norm. After nearly 50 remixes for everyone from Mariah Carey to Annie to Thieves Like Us, the diverse electronic group, comprised of Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson, are set to release their debut album HARDCORE/SOFTCORE on Ultra Records in February 2011.

Where past productions and remixes have been on the poppier end of the musical spectrum, Hardcore conjures up a darker, edgier vibe – think the throbbing, industrial-heavy opening club scene in “The Doom Generation” – yet still retains a melodic center on many of the tracks. “I think we’re making music for the apocalypse,” says Michael, only half-joking. “The state of society is at a place where people just don’t give a fuck and that’s what inspires our music.”
