Entering their sixth year as a touring band, Bawn in the Mash will now offer Itunes users over 60 published songs to choose from with the release of their forthcoming eponymous album. Since 2004, Bawn in the Mash have performed over 300 shows across the country, ranging from eclectic music festivals to hosting their own annual Cluckin’ and Pluckin’. Listeners are often treated to an opening set of dynamic acoustics, followed by a second set that typically pushes the limits of experimental music- unclassifiable to any specific genre. All members of the band are multi-instrumentalists, utilizing everything from the violin to their own custom made instruments.
Early fans watched the band go from busking Appalachian street corners to headlining the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion– from performing on the corner of 4th and Broadway to selling out the world famous Station Inn– and from playing local barrooms to performing in the Victorian Ballroom aboard the Delta Queen steamboat, as the band continually progresses and impresses listeners worldwide.
Every folk-singer has to migrate to the city, in a way it seems to be hidden in definition of a folk singer anymore. Cody (aka Chicago Farmer) has come to remind Chicago that it is indeed in Illinois. And to remind the rest of the world that when Louis Armstrong redefined, some say invented the art of Jazz in the 1920′s he brought his Hot Fives to Chicago to do it. When Robert Johnson wanted to put his Mississippi Mud on wax, his hellhound chased him to Chicago to do it. And same like, Cody has come to Chicago to deliver what it needs, when it isn’t even sure itself. He is currently recording a collection of songs from his vast back-catalog and performing across the heartland.
Cody’s voice is powerful and gritty, emotionally piercing while subtly imbuing additional layers of meaning and poignancy in his lyrical delivery. His song-writing is deeply rooted in the American Folk tradition and all of its grit but with a post Dylan sense of wit, perspicacity and that certain savior-faire. He didn’t go to college but he drank all of their beer..
