Fri 6.10 – Chicago Afrobeat Project

Afrobeat / Funk / Worldbeat

Chicago Afrobeat Project

Doors 8pm / Show 9pm / 21+ / $10

Afrobeat cannot stand still. As the genre’s tempting sounds continue a resurgence across the globe, Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) remains true to its original vision of breathing the intensity of Chicago’s rich music scene into the infectious sounds of afrobeat. Rather than become caricatures of the genre, CAbP slips a reverent nod to the tradition while delivering an energized originality different from any other band on the afrobeat scene today. At each of its 100+ live performances a year, the group’s frenzied songs hit audiences with a big enough one-two punch to tirelessly knock them onto the dance floor time and time again.

Afrobeat’s range of influences — funk, rock,  jazz, afro-cuban, high life and juju music – settle into a hypnotic, dance-compelling pulse at the core of CAbP. The group layers a fiery originality around this core through high-energy rock and experimental jazz.  The trance-like grooves that hold the floor in the tradition are pushed to new borders in CAbP’s second and self-produced album, (A) Move to Silent Unrest. In it, the group keeps true to the mix of respect to the tradition and forward-thinking experimentation that shine through in their live performances.

Join the dance party!

Thu 6.9 – Mountain Standard Time

Rock / Bluegrass / Jam / Psychedelic

Mountain Standard Time + The Foggy Memory Boys

Doors 8pm / Show 9pm / 18+ / $5 cover ($5 minor surcharge)

As a bluegrass band that’s anything but traditional, Mountain Standard Time follows in the footsteps of such Colorado greats as The String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon. While leading acoustically with guitar, mandolin, and banjo, MST brands its own style, boasting a big, full-band sound with saxophone, electric bass, drums, and electric
effects.

The members of Mountain Standard Time hail from all over the country, yet their musical paths crossed in Nederland – a small, Colorado mountain town steeped in bluegrass music. Whether you chalk it up to fate or coincidence, music goers everywhere are coming together to enjoy the “bluegrass fusion” that these six friends and musicians have come to create. MST has performed all over Colorado and across the country, with appearances at Wakarusa Music Festival, 10,000 Lakes
Festival, Summer Camp Music Festival, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival contest finals, among other events.

Mountain Standard Time’s roots stem from late night “picks” among the bluegrass faithful, making music lovers dance from mountain towns to backwoods campfires. Rich lyrics, original melodies, vocal harmonies and driving backbeats have been moving fans across the country, while the band’s unique charisma has been winning hearts.

“Start with a dose of old-school, Marley-Toots-Tosh reggae and infuse it with everything from Sun Ra Arkestra freak jazz to Steve Vai guitar pyrotechnics. Inventive intersections like these define Spiritual Rez”
